Honours Academy x BGCA: Life Financial Explorers ─ Pre-teens Financial Literacy Workshop 2024

On 22 June 2024, the Honours Academy (HA) hosted a community service event in collaboration with The Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong’s Community Creativity Learning Centre (BGCA CCLC). Entitled “Life Financial Explorers ─ Pre-teens Financial Literacy Workshop 2024”, the event catered to 15 external school students and children of HSUHK colleagues, ranging from primary two to secondary one levels.

Since our partnership with this NGO began in 2022, our workshop series has consistently achieved remarkable success. This year, HA students crafted an event like no other, designed to empower primary school students with essential financial literacy skills through a unique blend of booth games, engaging mini-lectures, and interactive board games, all designed and executed by our HA students.

Building on the success of the HA-designed financial-decision board games since 2023, this year’s event saw a fantastic evolution, incorporating a range of engaging activities designed to challenge and stimulate young participants before diving into the upgraded board game experience.

Participants first engaged in a series of social stimulation booth games that tested their intellectual, athletic, reflective, collaborative, and logical skills. These interactive challenges allowed them to earn a bit of “money” or allowance, adding a realistic economic dimension to the board game session.

The board game itself was enhanced into three distinct stages: secondary school, university life, and early career. Each stage presented different financial challenges and decisions, reflecting the progression of real-life experiences. From managing school expenses to navigating the financial complexities of university life and making early career choices, participants were faced with scenarios that required strategic thinking and sound financial planning.

Throughout the event, HA students provided mini lectures between the board game stages to guide participants and offer valuable insights. These lectures were designed to help the young participants understand the financial concepts and decisions they were encountering in the game, further enriching their learning experience.

A strong team of cross-cohort HA students from our second, third, and fourth cohorts dedicated their creativity and expertise to crafting this year’s event. They designed captivating props and visuals, and every game piece, illustration, and informative card was thoughtfully created to bring the board game to life. The vibrant and engaging materials helped create an immersive environment that kept participants excited and engaged.

The entire afternoon buzzed with energy, as primary and secondary school students enthusiastically engaged in the activities. Their faces shone with joy and eagerness, reflecting their appreciation for the mentorship and encouragement provided by our HA students. This year’s event not only deepened their understanding of financial responsibilities and opportunities but also cultivated a strong sense of community and teamwork among all participants.

Since 2022, our collaboration with the BGCA CCLC has continually strengthened the bond between our units. As we look to the future, HA eagerly anticipates partnering with various schools and community units, driving forward impactful initiatives that address timely and relevant topics. Through these efforts, HA aims to significantly enhance the well-being and development of children and youth in our community.
