Date: 20 Mar 2025 (Thu)
The Honours Academy (HA) Seminar Series featured a captivating Galvanised Iron Mini Mailbox Making Workshop on 20 March 2025. In collaboration with the Hong Kong and South China Historical Research Programme and instructed by galvanised iron artist Mr Luk, the workshop began with an introduction to the history and evolution of galvanised iron craftsmanship, highlighting its significance in local culture. Participants also learned about Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), deepening their appreciation for this fading material and art form.
In the practical session, HA students crafted their own mini mailboxes using galvanised iron, allowing them to experience the creative process firsthand. They first designed the pattern for their artwork and then assembled the components step by step, encouraging their individual creativity. The classroom was filled with the rhythmic sound of hammering galvanised iron, capturing the intensity and focus of the craftsmanship while also serving as a form of stress relief.
In addition to the craftmanship techniques, participating HA students appreciated the educational aspects of preserving ICH and learned to pay attention to details as well as problem solving skills. One HA student remarked, “Experiencing the history and story of traditional craftsmanship becomes more meaningful and engaging by actively interacting with the materials.”
The workshop not only provided hands-on skills but also fostered greater respect for craftsmanship, broadening horizons and enhancing understanding of Hong Kong’s ICH, showcasing the community’s commitment of HA to cultural appreciation.
