HA Seminar – Global Immersion Sharing & HA Recruitment Briefing

Date: 27 March 2023
Time: 3:00pm-4:30pm
Venue: The Inspiring, The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong

Seeing is believing. That is why our Honours Academy (HA) students are all eager to engage in a one-semester exchange during their HA journey.

Seeing MORE is even better. That is why the HA is having our Global Immersion Programme. GIP is one of the HA’s signature events designed for our high-achieving HA students to participate and even engineer their own transformative and immersive overseas learning opportunity where they get to experience different cultures, languages and ways of thinking, and to develop a global perspective.

First launched in January 2023, the first-ever GIP welcomed a troop of 20 HA first- and second-cohort students with the destination being the Lion City, a country that offers us an expeditious glimpse into different Asian cultures: Singapore. In collaboration with the Residential College 4 of The National University of Singapore (NUS), our HA student-leaders spent their first week in January, experiencing Singapore to the fullest, and interacting with the NUS students there.

Upon their triumphant return, in the afternoon of March 27, 2023, our HA GIP delegation, was all eager to share with their HA peers all of their valuable international exposure, in our HA Seminar#5: HA Student-Leaders’ GIP Sharing & HA 4th-Cohort Recruitment Briefing Session.

On top of the sharing of our HA students’ invaluable international experiences, this seminar was also dedicated to the recruitment of our promising fourth cohort. Aspiring first-year undergraduates were encouraged to attend to witness firsthand the transformative power of the Global Immersion Programme and its potential to shape their academic and personal development.

Head of the Honours Academy, Prof Jeanne Fu, intrigued the curious minds in the audience with the holistic and exciting three-year HA journey in which cohorts of high-achieving students have already been nurtured into global citizens and future leaders. Twenty of such aspiring students then, in four groups with their respective themes, took turns to provide valuable insights, highlighting Singapore’s unique policies, economic success, diverse communities and cultural celebrations.

Team 1 shared their observations on Singapore’s social and housing policies, highlighting the country’s public-housing approach to ensuring a roof for most of its citizens. Team 2 shed light on how Singapore intertwined technological advancement with its tourist spots and infrastructure facilities. Team 3 shared their experiences interacting with Singapore’s youth and community, discussing the cultural differences they observed and how the country’s diverse communities come together to create a unique national identity. Finally, Team 4 presented their findings on Singapore’s culture and diversity, discussing the country’s multiculturalism and how it is celebrated through various cuisines.

The HA Seminar#5 was a testament to the Honours Academy’s commitment to providing our students with a holistic education that prepares them for the global stage.
