On the morning of 27 September 2025, Honours Academy (HA) students from across cohorts gathered for a transformative learning experience on personal branding and strategic communication. The seminar, titled “The LinkedIn Launchpad: What to Post, What to Skip, and How to Shine”, featured two distinguished speakers whose insights bridged public relations financial world by using LinkedIn.

In the first segment, Professor Angela Mak (Assoicate Professor, HKBU) brought over 25 years of experience in public relations and CSR/ESG communication. With warmth and wit, she guided our HA students through profile-building essentials, emphasising storytelling, authenticity, and strategic content creation. Her use of Cantonese idioms—such as “唔三唔四” and “九唔搭八”—offered a culturally resonant way to highlight common LinkedIn mistakes, making the session both relatable and memorable.

Students were empowered to reflect on their online personas through interactive exercises, including drafting posts, analysing examples, and exploring how their academic and extracurricular journeys could be translated into impactful content. Professor Mak’s message was clear: LinkedIn is not just a digital resume—it is a platform for meaningful engagement and professional storytelling.

The second half of the seminar featured Mr Peter Yuen, Head of Hong Kong Office at a leading international trading firm and a panelist at HKES. As a seasoned quant and APAC microstructure expert whose work has shaped market design and innovation across the region, Mr Yuen offered a candid look into the dos and don’ts of reaching out to senior professionals on LinkedIn. Through real-life case studies, he illustrated how ego-driven posts and generic outreach can undermine credibility. Instead, he advocated for thoughtful, personalized communication that respects the audience and builds genuine connections.

He also emphasised clarity, consistency, and community-building in one’s LinkedIn strategy. His advice resonated with students aiming to enter competitive industries, where a strong digital presence can be a powerful differentiator.

Throughout this Saturday morning, HA students were highly engaged—asking insightful questions, participating in case discussions, and continuing conversations with the speakers after the session. The atmosphere was one of curiosity, collaboration, and inspiration.

This seminar not only equipped students with practical tools for LinkedIn success but also empowered them with a deeper understanding of how strategic communication can shape their professional journeys. It was a morning filled with meaningful learning, authentic sharing, and future-focused growth.

A heartfelt thank you to Professor Mak and Mr Yuen for generously sharing their wisdom and empowering our future leaders with such impactful knowledge!
