Real-World Sustainability in Action

HA Seminar x AS Watson Industries: Real-World Sustainability in Action

Closing the academic year on a high note, the Honours Academy (HA) hosted its final seminar of AY2024/25 with an immersive site visit to AS Watson Industries (Hong Kong Office). More than just a corporate visit, the experience offered students a rare, first-hand look into how sustainability is integrated into the strategy and operations of one of Asia’s largest international health and beauty retailers.

During the visit, HA students were introduced to how sustainability is put into practice across AS Watson’s retail and manufacturing arms. From carbon reduction strategies and sustainable packaging to circular design and environmental innovation, the sessions offered a real-world perspective on how businesses are responding to global climate challenges.

But the day wasn’t just about listening — it was about creating. In the second half of the seminar, students took part in the energetic HA x AS Watson Sustainability Hackathon.

The highlight of the day was the HA x AS Watson Sustainability Hackathon, where students were invited to co-create solutions for real-world environmental challenges. Divided into four teams, they had just under 30 minutes to brainstorm, prototype, and pitch bold new ideas for sustainable products. One group introduced a “humidifier-and-dehumidifier” featuring a customisable, interactive mascot designed to promote sustainable hydration. Another proposed a refillable, eco-packaged water container to replace single-use plastic bottles. A third team envisioned an accessories collection using AS Watson’s own eco-friendly plastic — turning waste into wearable statements of sustainability while the final team introduced a stylish mobile phone case made entirely from recycled materials.

The hackathon brought out the best of HA — creativity, collaboration, and a deep sense of purpose. It also reflected HA’s mission: to support students in becoming future leaders and global citizens who are not only capable thinkers, but also responsible changemakers committed to making a meaningful impact.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the AS Watson Industries Sustainability Team for their support, inspiration, and belief in the potential of our students. This seminar has left our HA students inspired, informed, and even more motivated to lead with vision and values.
