3-11 July 2025, Singapore
In July 2025, a group of four Honours Academy (HA) student leaders—Charis, Cathy, Charmaine, and Elvin, all from HA’s 5th cohort—set off for Singapore to represent HA at the Social Sustainability Leadership Forum (SSLF). Held from 3 to 11 July and hosted by the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), this forum gathered university student leaders from across Asia—including Singapore, India, Indonesia, Macau, and Mainland China. Centred to explore the theme “Empowering Good Health and Wellbeing”, aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 3.
From Insight to Inspiration: A Week of Immersive Learning
The journey began with a deep dive into youth volunteerism at The Red Box, home of Youth Corps Singapore. There, participants explored how service is rooted in community and identity. They then returned to SUSS’s newly launched space at Blk 23 to discover the impactful work of student advocacy groups—sparking conversations on mental health, sustainability, and inclusive design.
The following day, the HA delegation took part in “Youths in Bloom”, a mass volunteering event led by Youth Corps Singapore, where they were paired with elderly beneficiaries for a scenic walk through Gardens by the Bay. What began as a simple act of service quickly grew into something more meaningful—a quiet exchange of stories, smiles, and connection that left a lasting impression on both sides.
Leadership in Action: Industry Visits & Grassroots Innovation
Throughout the week, the students engaged in company visits to seven leading organisations—including L’Oréal, Gallup, Dementia & Co, Dignity Kitchen, and Bold at Work. Each visit revealed how businesses can embed social sustainability into culture, operations, and purpose.
Midway through the forum, the energy shifted from observation to creation. In the Experiential Learning Cycle Workshop, the participants co-developed “Walk With Me”, an initiative pairing student volunteers with active seniors for guided walks to promote intergenerational wellbeing. Presented at the Geronpreneurship Innovation Festival, the project was praised for its empathy-driven, scalable design.
Community, Connection, and the Stories That Shape Us
SSLF also brought participants face-to-face with the real meaning of social impact. On Community Day, the delegation visited organisations supporting diverse groups—from seniors to migrant workers and people with disabilities. These visits offered real-world perspectives on access, equity, and grassroots innovation.
The day concluded with a Human Library session, where individuals shared personal stories of resilience and change. It was a powerful reminder that leadership begins with listening and understanding.
The Grand Finale: A Celebration of Culture, Courage, and Commitment
The forum concluded with team presentations and a Cultural Performance Showcase, where students celebrated their heritage through music, dance, and storytelling. The HA delegation’s workshop and contributions reflected clarity, care, and a strong commitment to social impact.
Looking Ahead: Leading Beyond Borders
Now back at HSUHK, Charis, Cathy, Charmaine and Elvin are ready to share what they have learned—through peer dialogues, student-led initiatives, and campus engagement. For them and our HA students as a whole, leadership does not end at the border. It grows stronger when it is shared.
Their journey reflects the Honours Academy’s mission: to nurture globally minded, socially responsible leaders who are ready to make a difference—wherever they go.
