Exclusive SCMP Newsroom Experience

As part of their HA2002: Service Leadership and Public Policy Engagement module, HA students were granted an exclusive, behind-the-scenes visit to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) newsroom on 6 March 2025. This rare opportunity allowed our HA students to step inside one of Asia’s most influential media organisations and witness first-hand how journalism shapes public discourse, governance, and policy-making.

Led by Ms Emily Tsang, Head of Young Post & Posties, this visit was not only an academic excursion but also an immersive learning experience that provided insights into SCMP’s rich history, its evolution in the digital age, and the future of multimedia journalism.

The visit began with a historical overview of SCMP, tracing its journey since its establishment in 1903. As they toured six levels of the newsroom, including editorial offices, studios, common areas, recreation spaces, and the newspaper archive, they witnessed journalism in action—where stories are researched, produced, and disseminated across multiple platforms. Seeing the shift from legacy printing machines to modern multimedia production highlighted the power of digital transformation in the media industry.

For future service leaders, understanding the evolution of media, its role in shaping public opinion, and its influence on governance and policy-making is essential. Observing the news production process in real time reinforced key leadership skills such as information literacy, adaptability, and ethical decision-making—all of which are central to the HA family’s ethos.

The learning did not stop at SCMP. On 13 March, Ms Tsang visited HSUHK for an in-depth talk and discussion, providing students with another opportunity to engage with a media leader and further refine their perspectives on leadership, public policy, and the press in today’s digital era.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Ms Emily Tsang and the SCMP team for this extraordinary experience. As HA students continue their journey in service leadership and public policy engagement, opportunities like these will undoubtedly broaden their perspectives and equip them with the skills to lead with integrity, vision, and purpose.
