On 5 September 2024, the Honours Academy (HA) at the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) welcomed its Fifth Cohort with an inspiring and engaging Orientation Workshop, setting the stage for a transformative academic journey.
Professor Joshua Mok, Chairman of the HA Board and Provost and Vice-President (Academic and Research), delivered an impactful opening speech, emphasising the importance of “care to learn and learn to care”. He urged the new cohort to appreciate their privileged status as HA students and encouraged them to give back to their communities through their academic endeavours.
The workshop’s highlight was a motivational talk and activity led by Professor Jeanne Fu, HA Board member, Founding Head of the HA, and Vice-President (Learning and Student Experience). Her insightful presentation on self-efficacy was reinforced by the egg challenge, a hands-on activity in which students worked together to balance an egg — a metaphor for overcoming challenges and standing resilient.
Dr Holly Chung, Head of the HA, followed with an introduction of the HA Leadership Team, who exemplify servant leadership and are committed to supporting the academic and personal development of the new cohort. Dr Chung also highlighted the HA’s core values of service, giving back, and engagement, underscoring HA’s mission to nurture leaders who positively impact both the university and the wider community. In a brief ice-breaking session, students introduced themselves to the cohort, further strengthening the sense of community.
Dr Pui-sze Cheung and Dr Willy Yue, Associate Heads of the HA, provided a preview of the exciting curriculum awaiting the Fifth Cohort. Dr Cheung introduced HA2001: Self-Awareness and Interpersonal Skills, along with the upcoming HA2002: Service Leadership and Public Policy, which will challenge students to apply their leadership skills in real-world contexts. Dr Yue elaborated on the experiential learning opportunities that will encourage students to reach their full potential.
HA’s Secretariat Team, led by Ms Alison Lam and Ms Joanne Chow, offered valuable insights into the various academic pathways available to students. They also introduced the HA Common Room as a dynamic space for collaboration, creativity, and community building. With clear roadmaps and an emphasis on professionalism, the Fifth Cohort is well-prepared to embark on their academic journey, eager to make a positive impact on the HA, HSUHK, and the broader community.
The HA Orientation Workshop was a resounding success, reflecting the academy’s commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and community service. Armed with knowledge, skills, and the support of the HA team, the new cohort is ready to begin an exciting leadership journey, poised to become the next generation of global citizens and leaders.
