Today’s Treasure Hunters, Tomorrow’s Future Wealth Leaders
— Building Intergenerational Community Engagement Through Play
On 18 April 2026, the Honours Academy (HA) of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK), together with the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA) Community Creativity Learning Centre, delivered the pre-teen track of the 6th Financial Literacy Workshop Series on the HSUHK campus, engaging nearly 30 primary and junior secondary students. Designed with intergenerational community engagement at its heart, this HA signature community engagement invited learning to begin in the community, and continue at home through meaningful parent–child dialogue.
A signature highlight of this year’s series was its parallel workshop model. While children joined the mission-based pre-teen workshop, parents were learning on the other side of the venue in a dedicated parent workshop. This two-track design strengthened intergenerational learning in real time, so families could leave not only with new knowledge, but also a shared language for everyday money choices, and a shared commitment to practise together.
Months of cross-cohort student leadership—built from the ground up
Behind the three-hour learning adventure was the dedication of cross-cohort HA student leaders. Over months of preparation, they designed the workshop from scratch, from game booth concepts and learning materials, to gaming mechanisms and the extended board game experience. With thoughtful planning and caring facilitation, they translated university learning into community-ready tools that reached children, engaged parents next door, and supported families in learning together across generations.
Game booths with purpose: earn “income,” make choices, reflect on outcomes
Under the theme “HA x BGCA: Today’s Treasure Hunters; Tomorrow’s Future Wealth Leaders”, participants stepped into a lively, hands-on experience. At student-designed game booths, children completed tasks to “earn income”, then practised allocating limited resources, distinguishing wants vs. needs, and seeing how different decisions lead to different consequences. Every booth, from rules and scoring, to pacing and reflection prompts, was carefully crafted so that play became meaningful learning, and every “win” came with a real-world takeaway.
From play to life: a custom board game that extends learning across generations
To deepen the experience, HA student leaders introduced a custom-designed life-stage simulation board game, guiding participants to imagine real financial choices from secondary school to university. The scenarios were designed as conversation starters, linking directly to what parents were discussing in the parallel parent workshop and helping families carry the learning forward into daily life.
Intergenerational community engagement in action
From design to facilitation, HA students served as an intergenerational bridge, making financial concepts age-appropriate, meaningful, and shareable, while aligning learning themes with the parent track next door. This is intergenerational community engagement at its best: students lead with purpose, the community learns with joy, and families bring the learning home—together.
