Seeds of Wealth: Financial Literacy Workshop for Parents 2026
— Intergenerational Community Engagement in Action
To bring financial education deeper into family life, the Honours Academy (HA) of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) introduced a milestone feature on 18 April 2026 under the 6th instalment of our signature community outreach programme, the Financial Literacy Workshop Series: the first-ever parallel parent workshop, delivered on the HSUHK campus in collaboration with the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA) Community Creativity Learning Centre.
A signature strength of the day was the parallel workshop model. While children were learning on the other side of the venue through a mission-based pre-teen workshop, parents joined “Seeds of Wealth: Financial Literacy Workshop for Parents 2026.” Learning side-by-side, families were able to build a shared language around money, turning a single community programme into intergenerational community engagement that can continue in everyday family conversations, long after the workshop ends.
Caring leadership in action: Designed from scratch by cross-cohort HA student leaders
This parent-facing workshop was a new branch of HA’s signature Financial Literacy Workshop Series. Therefore, it was created from scratch, shaped through a months-long, cross-cohort effort by HA student leaders who brought both rigour and heart to every detail. From the content architecture and learning materials, to programme flow and on-site facilitation, the experience was built with one guiding intention: to serve families well.
Every element, from talks, drama skits, interactive segments, group discussions, to facilitation roles, was planned and led by our students. Their calm presence, thoughtful preparation, and respectful engagement with parents reflected caring leadership in action: leadership that listens, supports, and empowers. HA is deeply grateful to our student leaders for translating university learning into a community-ready parent workshop that was warm, practical, and genuinely uplifting.
A practical tool families can carry forward: the student-designed financial diary
To extend learning beyond the venue, HA student leaders also developed a financial diary for parents and children which is an easy-to-use tool with prompts that encourage reflection, goal-setting, and family conversation. More than a handout, the diary is an invitation for families to practise together: to notice spending patterns, name values, set small goals, and celebrate progress, one page at a time. In this way, workshop learning becomes a shared habit that grows across generations.
Parents’ feedback: professional, packed, and deeply meaningful
Parents shared that they were impressed by the HA student facilitators’ professionalism and the workshop’s packed yet meaningful design. The programme balanced depth with accessibility, giving parents space to exchange ideas, learn from one another, and leave with concrete strategies for nurturing healthier money conversations with their children.
As part of HA’s participation in Hong Kong Money Month 2026 and Global Money Week 2026, in collaboration with the Investor and Financial Education Council (IFEC), the parent workshop demonstrated what HA community engagement looks like at its best: student leadership that cares, community learning that connects, and intergenerational engagement that continues beyond the campus and into the home.
